Charge Overnight on Your Own Solar

A wall charger fills your car far faster than a power point, and smart charging times it to your cheapest power: midday solar if the car is home, or an off-peak overnight rate if it is not.

A typical household that drives 30 to 40km a day needs only a few hours on a home charger to put that back*. The charger is rarely the limit. The switchboard behind it often is.

Power Point or Wall Charger?

Range figures assume a car that uses about 15 to 18kWh per 100km, so they vary with the model. Check your car's maximum AC charge rate before paying for a bigger charger than it can use.

Chargers We Install

OptionTypical powerNotes
Standard power pointAbout 2.3kWSlow. Adds roughly 10 to 15km of range per hour. Not designed for long daily use.
Single-phase wall chargerUp to 7kWThe usual home choice. Adds about 40km of range per hour.
Three-phase wall charger11kW to 22kWOnly worthwhile if your car can accept it. Many cars cap AC charging at 7kW or 11kW.
04

Smart Charging and Load Management

We set up scheduling and load balancing so the charger and your home never trip the supply, and so the car draws from your solar first. Some chargers read your solar production directly, and others work from a schedule.

Older switchboards sometimes need work before a charger can go on. See our electrical and switchboard upgrades page for what that involves.

Charging From Solar and a Battery

Australian homeowners reviewing electric car charging from rooftop solar and an outdoor home battery

Midday solar is the cheapest fuel your car will ever get. If the car is home during the day, a charger that follows solar production can run it almost for free. If it is away, a battery stores the power for an overnight top-up.

The sums change with the size of your battery. We worked through them on the 20kWh battery page, and the 10kW solar and battery package suits a household adding one EV. For the bigger picture, see solar and battery storage.

What the Installation Involves

  • A site check of the switchboard, spare capacity, cable run and where the charger will mount
  • A dedicated circuit with the right protection, installed to Australian wiring rules
  • Mounting, commissioning and a walkthrough of the app and scheduling
  • A certificate of compliance for the electrical work

Questions

Common Questions

01What Does EV Charger Installation Involve?
It depends on the charger, the distance from the switchboard and whether the board needs work. We give a clear written quote after a site check or photos of your switchboard.
02Single-Phase or Three-Phase?
Most homes use single-phase and a 7kW charger. Three-phase only helps if your home has it and your car can accept more than 7kW on AC.
03Can It Charge From My Solar?
Yes. Solar-aware chargers adjust to your panel output, and any charger can run on a schedule that matches your solar hours.
04How Long Does Installation Take?
Most home chargers take a few hours.
05Do I Need a Charger If I Have a Power Point?
A power point works for occasional use but is slow and not designed for daily long charging. A wall charger is faster and has the right protection.
