30kWh Battery

A 30kWh battery is a serious piece of kit. It suits big households with heavy overnight loads, and small businesses and farms that want to cut peak-time power and keep running through an outage. Here is what the rebate really gives you and how to check it fits before you commit.

30kW or 30kWh? Which One You Mean

Plenty of searchers type "30kW solar battery" and mean storage. Strictly, kW is power and kWh is stored energy, and a 30kW solar array is a different (and much larger) thing from a 30kWh battery. This page covers the battery: 30 kilowatt-hours of usable storage. Solar array sizes are covered on our solar and battery package pages.

02

What Shapes a 30kWh Battery Quote

At this size the extras matter more than they do on a small battery: a three-phase upgrade, heavier cabling, a switchboard upgrade and a larger inverter can each affect the scope of work. We list them separately in your quote so nothing is hidden.

The 28kWh Line and What It Means for 30kWh

The federal rebate pays the full rate on the first 14kWh, 60 percent on the next 14kWh (up to 28kWh), and only 15 percent from 28kWh to 50kWh*. A 30kWh battery therefore has two kilowatt-hours sitting in that last, thin band.

This creates a practical question. If your brand's module sizes let you build a system at or just under 28kWh, ask whether it covers your needs. You may save thousands on the hardware and give up very little rebate. If you really do need 30kWh or more, the extra capacity is worth it only for the storage, not for the rebate.

Who Needs a Battery This Size

  • A big household with several EVs, a pool and a workshop
  • Acreage with water pumps, sheds and a long day of irrigation or dairy loads
  • A café, clinic, bakery or small manufacturer with a steady evening or early-morning load
  • Anyone who wants days of backup for essentials rather than hours*

For a typical family home, 30kWh is more than the evening needs. Look at 20kWh first, and let your bills decide.

Charging 30kWh: How Much Solar You Need

Installer assessing a broad black rooftop solar array and tall ground-standing battery at a rural home

A battery you cannot fill is dead weight. Typical yield assumptions put a 13kW array at roughly 50kWh a day on average in Sydney, and a 10kW array at about 38kWh*. The house uses part of that during daylight, so the surplus left for the battery is what counts.

What a 30kWh Installation Involves

Every home and site is different. Your quote reflects your roof, switchboard, energy use, network rules and the equipment you choose, and we set it out in writing after a free assessment so you can compare it line by line.

07

What Decides Your Savings

We do not promise a payback figure, because it depends on things only your site can answer.

  • The price gap between the grid rate you pay at peak and the cheaper power you store.
  • How much of the battery you cycle. A battery used daily earns its keep. One that sits half full does not.
  • Demand charges. Some business tariffs charge by your highest half-hour of use. A battery can trim that peak. This can matter more than energy charges.
  • Incentives and programs your state, network or retailer may offer.

A quote from us includes an estimate built from your bills, with the assumptions written down.

30kWh for a Business or Farm

If the site is a business in NSW, the battery may be eligible for a separate state incentive on top of the federal rebate. It applies to batteries from 20kWh up to 200kWh (BESS4) from 1 September 2026, and rewards pairing the battery with new solar. Read the detail on NSW Commercial Battery Incentive, or see our wider Commercial Solar and Battery service.

What to Check at This Size

The items that matter more as the battery gets bigger.

ItemWhy it matters at 30kWh
ModulesThe battery usually arrives as several modules, so it needs floor or wall space and a proper stack or rack
PlacementMust meet AS/NZS 5139 clearances and avoid habitable areas and exits
InverterOften larger than a residential unit, sometimes three-phase
SupplyMany sites need three-phase or a supply upgrade
NetworkConnection approval, and sometimes export or inverter limits
TimeA longer job than a standard home battery.

Important Information

* Rebate details, output figures and timeframes shown are indicative estimates based on stated assumptions, not an offer, quote or guarantee. Your outcome depends on your site, roof, switchboard, network, products and the date of installation, and your written quote prevails. Savings and payback are not guaranteed. See clauses 24.1 to 24.5 of the Terms and Conditions.

Questions

Common Questions

01What Affects the Quote for a 30kWh Battery?
It depends on your home, your site and the equipment you choose, so we confirm it in a written quote after a free assessment.
02What Is the Rebate on a 30kWh Battery?
It depends on your home, your site and the equipment you choose, so we confirm it in a written quote after a free assessment.
03Is 30kWh Too Much for a House?
For most houses, yes. It suits large homes with heavy overnight loads, such as several EVs, or sites like farms and small businesses.
04Why Does the 30kWh Rebate Feel Low?
Because the rebate pays the full rate only on the first 14kWh, 60 percent to 28kWh and 15 percent above that.
05How Big a Solar System Do I Need to Charge a 30kWh Battery?
A 13kW array is a realistic match for most of the year. A 10kW array will often fall short in winter.
06Can I Get an Incentive for a Business Battery in NSW?
Possibly. Eligible NSW business sites can access a state incentive on batteries from 20kWh to 200kWh from 1 September 2026. See the NSW incentive page.
07Does 30kW Mean 30kWh?
No. kW measures power and kWh measures energy stored.
