15kWh Home Battery

The step above the usual home battery. Fifteen kilowatt-hours gives a busy household proper overnight cover, and it only gives up a sliver of rebate to do it. Here is who it suits and what to check first.

Where 15kWh Sits on the Rebate Scale

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program pays its full rate on the first 14kWh of usable capacity. A 15kWh battery has 14kWh in that band and one extra kilowatt-hour in the next, which earns 60 percent of the rate. You lose almost nothing compared with a 14kWh battery, which is why 15kWh is one of the more rebate-efficient large sizes.

What Shapes a 15kWh Battery Quote

A few things push the number up or down: the brand and its modules, whether you need three-phase, the state of your switchboard, how far the install is from the meter, and your network's connection rules.

Confirm the current rules with the Clean Energy Regulator.

Who Gets the Most From 15kWh

Australian family using evening appliances powered by a ground-standing home battery
  • Four or more people at home in the evening
  • An electric car charged at home on most nights
  • Ducted or multiple split-system air conditioners running through winter and summer
  • A heat pump hot water system or a pool pump on a timer

It is more than you need if your evening use is modest. Check your smart meter or bill first. If the numbers say you use well under 14kWh overnight, ask us about a smaller battery.

One Evening on a 15kWh Battery

Here is an illustrative night for a large family home. Treat the loads as examples, because every house is different.

The battery covers the lot with a little to spare. If the EV is charging at 7kW instead, one hour alone takes 7kWh, and you are into 20kWh territory.

15kWh or 20kWh?

Pick 20kWh because you will use it, not because it feels safer. See the 20kWh battery.

Solar to Pair With It

A 6.6kW array is the minimum to keep a 15kWh battery topped up through the year, and it will struggle on short winter days. A 10kW array is a comfortable match, and a 13kW array fills it early and leaves plenty to run the house.

If you already own solar, tell us in the quote form and we will check what you have.

Checks Before You Book

  • Is your existing inverter compatible, or does it need replacing?
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply?
  • Where will the battery go, and does that location meet AS/NZS 5139 clearances?
  • Which circuits do you want kept on in a blackout?
  • Does your network limit export or inverter size?

We cover these at the assessment and put the answers in your quote.

Important Information

* Rebate details, output figures and timeframes shown are indicative estimates based on stated assumptions, not an offer, quote or guarantee. Your outcome depends on your site, roof, switchboard, network, products and the date of installation, and your written quote prevails. Savings and payback are not guaranteed. Questions

Common Questions

01What Affects the Quote for a 15kWh Battery?
Your written quote is confirmed after your assessment*.
02How Much Is the Rebate on a 15kWh Battery?
It depends on your home, your site and the equipment you choose, so we confirm it in a written quote after a free assessment.
03Is 15kWh Enough to Get Through the Night?
For most households, yes. A typical evening and overnight for a large family sits around 14kWh. Heavy loads such as fast EV charging can use it faster.
04Can I Add 15kWh to Solar I Already Have?
Often. It depends on your inverter. We check compatibility at the assessment.
05Will It Work in a Blackout?
Only if it is set up for backup, with a suitable inverter and a backup circuit. Tell us at quote stage if that matters.
