Batteries
Home and commercial storage, battery-ready where it makes sense.

The federal battery rebate counts the first 50kWh of a battery and nothing beyond it, so 50kWh is the top of the scale for the household discount. It is also where most buyers are businesses, farms and large rural properties. Here is what it earns back and what to think about before you go bigger.

Under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, small-scale technology certificates are calculated on the first 50kWh of usable capacity. Batteries up to 100kWh nominal capacity remain eligible, but the capacity above 50kWh earns no extra certificates*. So a 50kWh battery gets the maximum federal discount available, and a 70kWh battery gets the same dollar amount as a 50kWh one.
That makes 50kWh a natural stopping point for the federal rebate, and a natural starting point for commercial thinking.

Switchboard capacity, three-phase works, protection equipment, trenching on larger properties and the network's connection requirements can all change it.

To put it in proportion, the rebate is roughly 15 percent of the battery's pre-rebate value. For a 15kWh battery it is about 24 percent. At this size, tariffs, demand charges and your own load pattern decide whether the project pays, far more than the rebate does.
Working: (14 x 6.8) + (14 x 4.08) + (22 x 1.02) = 174.76 STCs.
Confirm the current rules with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Larger systems are designed as commercial projects. See Commercial Solar and Battery, and our NSW Commercial Battery Incentive page for eligible sites.
| Battery size | Federal rebate | Other routes |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50kWh | Rises with size, with the tiered rates | NSW business incentive may apply from 20kWh |
| 50kWh to 100kWh | No extra beyond the 50kWh amount | NSW business incentive may apply (BESS4, to 200kWh) |
| 100kWh to 200kWh | Not eligible for the federal program | NSW BESS4 may apply for eligible business sites |
| Above 200kWh | Not eligible | NSW BESS5 may apply, on the first 10MWh |
If that is not you, smaller sizes are almost certainly better value. See our large battery size guide.
A 50kWh battery is heavy, usually split into several modules, and needs planning.
We cover each item in a site assessment before giving you a quote.
We do not promise a payback figure. We build one from your data, and write the assumptions on the page.
You get the result with the assumptions written down. If the numbers do not stack up for your site, we will say so.

We fit storage from manufacturers with local support teams, so the warranty on your battery still means something in ten years.

Brand availability depends on your system design and location. We confirm the selected equipment and manufacturer warranty in your written quote.
* Rebate details, output figures and timeframes shown are indicative estimates based on stated assumptions, not an offer, quote or guarantee. Your outcome depends on your site, roof, switchboard, network, products and the date of installation, and your written quote prevails. Savings and payback are not guaranteed.
