Hot Water Heat Pumps for Australian Homes

Hot water is one of the biggest energy uses in a home. A heat pump delivers the same hot water on around 60 to 75% less electricity than a standard electric element system*, and costs even less to run when it uses your solar.

Around 60 to 75% Less Electricity for Hot Water*

A heat pump moves heat from the air into the water instead of making heat with an element. Compared with a conventional electric storage system, Victorian Government guidance puts the saving at around 60 to 75 percent less electricity*. Set it to heat in the middle of the day and it runs on your cheapest solar power.

The saving depends on what you are replacing, how much hot water you use and your electricity tariff. We work it out from your bills before you commit, and we do not promise a figure.

How a Heat Pump Works

  • Draw. A fan pulls outdoor air across a coil, and the refrigerant absorbs its heat, even on a cool day.
  • Compress. A compressor raises the refrigerant's temperature.
  • Transfer. The hot refrigerant passes its heat to the water in the tank.

A small amount of electricity runs the fan and compressor. Most of the heat comes free from the air. Solar Victoria's guide to heat pump hot water gives the same range for the electricity saved against a conventional electric system.

Rebates and Incentives

Federal small-scale technology certificates (STCs) and some state programs can take a large amount off the upfront cost. The Clean Energy Regulator explains how small-scale technology certificates work, and our rebates and incentives guide shows how they fit together.

NSW households can also look at the state's Home Energy Saver program, which lists heat pumps among eligible upgrades. We confirm what you qualify for and handle the paperwork.

Heat Pump, Solar Hot Water or Gas?

If you are already planning rooftop solar, a heat pump is usually the more flexible partner, because it turns surplus daytime power into stored hot water.

Works in cold weatherYes, with a booster in extreme coldNeeds a boosterYes

05

Run It on Your Solar

Hot water is a flexible load. A heat pump on a timer heats the tank at midday, when your panels are working hardest, and that stored heat serves your evening showers. It saves your battery capacity for other loads.

Pair it with solar and battery storage and watch the effect in the energy monitoring app.

06

Sizing and Installation

Tank size follows household size and habits. As a rule of thumb, a household of one or two people suits a smaller tank, three or four people a mid-sized tank, and a larger household or high use a bigger one. We confirm the size on site.

Installation covers removing the old system, positioning the outdoor fan unit with enough airflow, connecting water and power, and testing. If the switchboard has no spare circuit, you may need a small electrical upgrade.

Questions

Common Questions

01Heat Pump vs Gas: How Do They Compare?
A heat pump is usually cheaper to run than gas, because it uses a small amount of electricity to move a larger amount of heat. The gap widens when it runs on your own solar.
02Heat Pump vs Solar Hot Water: Which Is Better?
Solar hot water needs roof panels and a booster for cloudy days. A heat pump needs no roof space and works in any weather. Many homes find a heat pump the simpler choice.
03Do Heat Pumps Work in Cold Climates?
Yes. Modern units work in cold weather, though efficiency drops as the air gets colder. Some models add an electric booster for extreme cold.
04How Much Is the Rebate?
It depends on your state, the model and the current certificate price. We confirm the figure for your home at the assessment.
05Are Heat Pumps Noisy?
The outdoor unit makes a low fan and compressor noise, similar to an air conditioner. We position it away from bedrooms and neighbours where we can.
