10kW Solar or 10kWh Battery? What the Number Means

  • 10kW is the solar array. It measures how much power the panels can make at once.
  • 10kWh is a battery. It measures how much energy it can store.

This page is the 10kW solar array package, paired by default with a 13.5kWh battery.

Who a 10kW System Suits

A 10kW system suits larger households, homes with someone around during the day, and anyone adding an electric car or heat pump hot water.

  • You use roughly 30 to 40 kWh a day.
  • You charge an EV at home a few times a week.
  • You run ducted or multiple split air conditioners through summer and winter.
  • You want to export less and cover more of your own use.

It may be more than you need if your bills are under about 20kWh a day*. See the 6.6kW package. If you have a very large home, a pool and multiple EVs, look at the 13kW package.

What Shapes a 10kW System Quote

If you only want solar for now, a 10kW system alone sits at the first row.

04

How Much Power Does a 10kW System Make?

In Sydney a 10kW system averages about 38kWh a day across the year*. Brisbane and Perth see more, Melbourne a little less. Winter output is lower, summer higher.

That is a lot of energy. A typical home will use most of it by day, charge the battery, and still export a share. If you have a battery of 13.5kWh, a good day fills it by early afternoon and the rest runs the house or goes to the grid.

05

Inverter Size and Network Limits

The panel array and the inverter are not the same number. Your electricity network sets the maximum inverter output and export for your area, so a 10kW array often runs on a smaller inverter. That is normal, and it can still be the right design, because the panels keep producing through the morning and afternoon when the inverter is working below its limit.

Some homes also need a three-phase supply or a network approval step before a 10kW system can be connected. We check this at your assessment, before you commit to anything.

07

Which Battery Pairs With 10kW of Solar?

A 10kW array makes more energy than a 10kWh battery can hold, so most 10kW homes step up to 13.5kWh or more*. Any extra still runs the house or exports.

Questions

Common Questions

01What Shapes a 10kW System Quote
It depends on your home, your site and the equipment you choose, so we confirm it in a written quote after a free assessment.
02What Is the Difference Between a 10kW System and a 10kWh Battery?
kW measures power, and for solar it is the size of the panel array. kWh measures stored energy, and for a battery it is capacity. A 10kW solar array and a 10kWh battery are different products.
03How Many Panels Is a 10kW System?
Usually 18 to 22 panels, depending on panel wattage.
04Is 10kW Too Big for a House?
Not if your roof has the space and you use the power. Network export limits and inverter rules shape the design, but a 10kW array on a smaller inverter is common. If your use is under about 20kWh a day, 6.6kW is often the better fit*.
05Do I Need Three-Phase Power for a 10kW System?
Not always. It depends on your network and the inverter size. We check your supply at the assessment.
06What Battery Size Do I Need With 10kW of Solar?
Most homes choose 13.5kWh. A 10kWh battery suits lower evening use and a 15kWh battery suits heavy evening use or EV charging.
